Hoe reageert een bos als je het verlicht? Wat gebeurt er in de bodem als er teveel voedingsstoffen in terecht komen, of in het water? Wat verandert er aan de soorten die voorkomen in een gebied en daarmee aan de functies die ze daar vervullen? Dat zijn belangrijke vragen waar we in de huidige maatschappij antwoorden op nodig hebben.

Waarom biodiversiteit onderzoeken?

Voor een gezonde leefomgeving is de verscheidenheid aan soorten cruciaal. Die verscheidenheid aan soorten noemen we biodiversiteit. ‘Houd de natuur in balans’, nieuwswebsites staan vol met verhalen. De biodiversiteit neemt namelijk op veel plekken af, als gevolg van menselijke activiteit. In de zoektocht naar dat herstel speelt ecologisch onderzoek een cruciale rol.

Wat onderzoeken we?

Hoe herstel je biodiversiteit? Dat is één van de vragen die we met ons onderzoek willen beantwoorden. Van grote tot kleine organismen, van DNA tot landschap en zowel op het land als in het water. Wat gebeurt er als een soort uitsterft of zonder natuurlijke vijand in Nederland komt?  Wat is de impact van microplastics, lichtvervuiling of medicijnresten? Wij kijken naar de ecologische gevolgen.

Hoe wordt ons onderzoek toegepast?

Met de uitkomsten van ons onderzoek kunnen we de biodiversiteit in Nederland en daarbuiten beter helpen beschermen. Van Duurzame Ontwikkeldoelen tot Living Labs. Het NIOO is een van de oorspronkelijke partners van het Deltaplan Biodiversiteitsherstel, een plan waarbij we met vele verschillende organisaties werken aan een Nederland waarin mens en natuur floreren. Op basis van de onderzoeksresultaten kunnen we beleidsmakers adviseren. Bijvoorbeeld in de Duin- en Bollenstreek.
