I get to combine my backgrounds in biology and communications to spread the word about ecology
Biografie
My background is in Biology and later communications. While I loved the subject of my bachelor's at Utrecht University I found out I wanted to use it for something other than academia. I am very interested in how nature works, in the broadest sense of the field. While studying for my master's degree in Bio Inspired Innovation I found science communication to be the perfect combination of learning new things about biology and using my skills to do something with this knowledge.
After learning more about the field of communications I came to the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) to combine these experiences. My work at NIOO lets me learn more about the scientific subjects I am so interested in, and to translate the expertise so more people can use it and learn from it. I now focus on writing accessible texts about the research done at NIOO, keeping our website up to date, and guide citizen science and other science communication projects.

A day in the life of a (citizen) scientist
What does a day as a researcher look like? That greatly depends on what kind of scientist you are. While some are working in greenhouses, and others are programming behind a laptop to process results, it looks different still when a researcher works with citizen scientists. City dandelions grow better in hot summers and flower better after mild winters than their rural counterparts, according to research by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) that compared dandelions from the centre of Amsterdam to plants outside the city. Paardenbloemen uit de stad groeien beter in warme zomers en bloeien beter na zachte winters dan hun soortgenoten op het platteland. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW), dat paardenbloemen uit het centrum van Amsterdam vergeleek met planten buiten de stad. Komend weekend is het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie op Lowlands te vinden. Tijdens dit muziekfestival in Biddinghuizen gaan zij samen met de bezoekers de waterkwaliteit van het plaatselijke meer – dat dan Lake Lowlands heet – onderzoeken en verbeteren om zo de biodiversiteit te ondersteunen.
