Waarom onderzoek naar klimaatverandering?

Overstromingen, uitstervende soorten en onvruchtbare bodems: hoe sneller de temperatuur van de aarde stijgt, hoe groter de gevolgen. Wat als we de opwarming van de aarde niet kunnen beperken?

Als we de opwarming van de aarde niet beperken zijn de gevolgen onomkeerbaar. Hoeveel veerkracht heeft de natuur? Hoe goed passen soorten zich aan?

Wat onderzoeken we?

Met ons ecologische klimaatonderzoek zoeken we naar het antwoord op klimaatvragen. Stel je voor dat we de CO2-opslag in de bodem van bossen of graslanden kunnen vergroten. Of dat we een manier vinden om ecosystemen te ondersteunen bij het aanpassen aan de klimaatveranderingen. Zo stellen we niet alleen vragen, maar komen we ook met concrete kennis.

Hoe wordt ons onderzoek toegepast?

Eén onderdeel van de oplossing voor het klimaatprobleem zijn onze onderzoeken naar het vergroten van biodiversiteit en duurzaam land- en watergebruik. We coördineren bijvoorbeeld de Long-Term Ecosystem Research (LTER-NL) faciliteiten. Samen buigen we ons over uitdagingen van de Europese Commissie. Ook gebruiken bijvoorbeeld de Verenigde Naties onze kennis voor adviezen.
