Gestimuleerd door de groeiende interesse in kennisvalorisatie in Nederland, wil AKWA graag dat haar waardevolle kennis ten goede komt aan de maatschappij. Daarom zoekt AKWA de samenwerking met waterschappen, belangenorganisaties, onderzoeksbureaus, ingenieursbureaus en het bedrijfsleven.
We bieden advies, onderzoek en training op het gebied van waterkwaliteit en het fuctioneren van aquatische systemen. We kunnen hierbij putten uit een breed pakket aan verschillende technieken zoals chemische analyses, indoor enclosures, gecontroleerde labexperimenten, tijdserieanalyses en modelanalyses. We hebben toegang tot de uitstekende experimentele en analytische faciliteiten van zowel de WUR als het NIOO. Voorbeelden van recente projecten zijn bestrijding van blauwalgenoverlast, aanpak van eutrofiëringsproblematiek en aanleg van natuurvriendelijke oevers.
AKWA is ingebed in een groep van onderzoekers van hoog wetenschappelijk niveau. Binnen deze groep zijn planktonspecialisten, microbiële specialisten, modelleurs en biochemici actief, met zowel een brede als een diepgaande kennis van het functioneren van aquatische ecosystemen.
AKWA wordt getrokken door dr. Lisette de Senerpont Domis van het NIOO, met meer dan tien jaar ervaring in aquatische ecologie en een interesse in klimaatsverandering. Dr. Miquel Lurling coordineert de WUR-activiteiten binnen AKWA. Hij heeft meer dan 20 jaar ervaring in aquatische ecologie, met een interesse in eutroficatie en schadelijke algenbloemen.

Onze moderne, state-of-the-art onderzoeksfaciliteiten bieden ons de mogelijkheid om experimenteel een variëteit aan aquatische groepen organismen te bestuderen in een experimentele laboratoriumomgeving. Van kleinschalige stromen door systemen, fotobioreactoren en chemostaten door microkosmossen tot grootschalige laboratorium-ecosystemen (1000-L Limnotrons).
Daarnaast voeren we experimenten uit op een meer realistische ruimtelijke en temporele schaal in onze outdoor enclosure faciliteiten en experimentele vijvers (Loenderveen). Voor onze experimentele studies hebben we volledige klimaatgecontroleerde faciliteiten tot onze beschikking.
Het brede scala aan state-of-the-art analytische apparatuur (bijvoorbeeld flowcytometrie, Cytobuoy, FlowCam, IRMS, ICP, moleculair lab), dat wordt beheerd door hoogopgeleide technici, stelt ons in staat om innovatieve, veelzijdige vraagstukken aan te pakken.
