Exotische waterplanten blijken gemiddeld niet te verschillen van inheemse soorten als je naar hun functie in de natuur kijkt. Ze bieden geregeld zelfs meerwaarde. Dit betekent geen vrijbrief voor alle exoten. Wel maakt het effectiever beheer mogelijk gebaseerd op eigenschappen van een plant in plaats van herkomst. Op dit onderzoek promoveert Bart Grutters van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) op woensdag 5 april.

Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal in the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, many farmers rely on this grain for food and feed. But Striga, a parasitic weed, can have a devastating impact on crop yield. With an 8-million-dollar grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an international team will now explore the potential of soil microbes to offer crop protection. The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) is coordinating this 5-year project.

Sorghum staat wereldwijd op nummer 5 van de belangrijkste graangewassen, en met name dankzij Afrika. Helaas is de sorghum-oogst van veel boeren daar erg onzeker door het schadelijke onkruid Striga. Met 8 miljoen dollar subsidie van de Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gaat een internationaal team nu onderzoeken hoe microscopisch klein bodemleven bescherming kan bieden. Het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) coördineert dit vijfjarige project.

‘Relationships’ in the soil become stronger during the process of nature restoration. Although all major groups of soil life are already present in former agricultural soils, they are not really ‘connected’ at first. These connections need time to (literally) grow, and fungi are the star performers here. A European research team led by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) has shown the complete network of soil life for the first time. This Wednesday, the results of the extensive study are published in Nature Communications.

De relaties in de bodem worden steeds sterker tijdens natuurherstel. Ook al zijn er op uit productie genomen landbouwgronden in het begin wel de grotere overkoepelende groepen bodemleven aanwezig, ze hebben dan nog maar weinig met elkaar. De relaties hebben ook letterlijk tijd nodig om te groeien, met een verbindende glansrol voor de schimmels. Een internationaal team onder leiding van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) toont voor het eerst het complete netwerk in de bodem. Deze woensdag staan de resultaten in Nature Communications.
