PhD: Biogeography of plant-associated fungi on the Galapagos islands (vacature in het Engels)
In this project, you will investigate the biogeography of above- and belowground fungi associated with several Scalesia species. We aim to develop an integrated view of diversity and distribution of three components of the fungal microbiome: arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), yeasts, and fungal pathogens colonizing roots and leaves. -

AI engineer in ecology (vacature in het Engels)
The Animal Ecology Department has several ongoing data and software-related projects that already integrate AI, LLM, and machine learning approaches into our work. Many of these projects will benefit from the hands-on assistance of a specialist in an area where opportunities are rapidly outpacing in-house expertise. We are also generating large, diverse datasets (including image libraries, video collections, sensor streams, and experimental data), and modern AI-based pipelines for extracting ecological information from them have to be developed. -

Postdoctoral researcher: Long-term ecological research on Lake IJsselmeer (vacature in het Engels)
Lake IJsselmeer is the largest reservoir of the Netherlands, providing important ecosystem services such as drinking water, fishing habitat, and flood risk protection. You will support a long-term ecological research programme on Lake IJsselmeer which is currently focused on water chemistry and phytoplankton. You will provide additional expertise to āadd valueā to the project. You will join a one-day pilot research cruise on the lake on 2 July 2026 and analyse the findings. Conduct and interpret analyses within your area of expertise that increase understanding of the functioning of Lake IJsselmeer and / or improve the methodologies and data pipelines for long-term sampling and analysis on Lake IJsselmeer. You prepare scientific publications and give conference presentations. This initiative is important to the strategic development of the Aquatic Ecology Department and you will be tasked with raising the profile of the Lake IJsselmeer project through a variety of commmuication channels.
