Soil biota under future-proof forests
Nitrogen deposition and climate change lead to soil acidification and desiccation. As a result, the vitality of forests declines sharply. This project seeks to revitalise the forests in The Hoge Veluwe National Park. -
The Centre for Soil Ecology goes national
Today, on World Soil Day, it is the perfect moment to present the new National Centre for Soil Ecology. All soil ecologists working in the Netherlands can now connect to the initiative that originally started in Wageningen. -

Research assessment NIOO-KNAW
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) performs leading ecological research, stimulates ecological research of the Netherlands, and shares its ecological knowledge with society. From the start in 1954, we had the task to carry out and promote ecological research, and to cooperate with other organisations involved in ecological research. In 2024 we'll celebrate 70 years of ecological research, and we'll have our 6-year international assessment.

IDEA stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility: important subjects for a research institute. At NIOO, we now have a special IDEA committee dedicated to this subject and taking concrete actions. -
Climate change impacts on harmful algal blooms
Harmful cyanobacterial blooms produce toxins that are a major threat to water quality and human health. Blooms increase with eutrophication and are expected to be amplified by climate change. Yet, we lack a mechanistic understanding on the toxicity of blooms, and their response to the complex interplay of multiple global change factors. Bloom toxicity is determined by a combination of mechanisms acting at different ecological scales, ranging from cyanobacterial biomass accumulation in the ecosystem, to the dominance of toxic species in the community, contribution of toxic genotypes in the population, and the amounts of toxins in cells. -
Landelijke dag Sovon
