Hi, my name is Gabriel, and I like to work with (almost) invisible things. Every day, as I walk into the lab at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), I’m reminded of the very small things that, despite their size, have a very big impact on our lives. Like the tiny microbes in our soils that help cycle nutrients, the gas molecules that heat our planet, or the almost invisible compounds that plants release from their roots. I'm a PhD student working on the ClipsMicro project, and my focus is on a simple and sustainable idea: using the right plants, at the right time, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from farmland.

Voor het 70e seizoen onderzoekt het NIOO koolmezen, steeds op exact dezelfde manier. De nestkast speelt daarin natuurlijk een sleutelrol. Hoe ziet die eruit, en waarom blijven we trouw aan dit model?

Een dag eerder dan verwacht zijn de eitjes uitgekomen. Het aantal jongen is lastig te zien, maar ik hou het op zeven, maar het kunnen het er ook acht zijn. Om dit helemaal zeker te weten moeten we nog even wachten totdat de jongen iets groter zijn.

Mijn collega’s struinen alweer door het bos voor het koolmezenonderzoek. Het broedseizoen komt op gang, de eerste jongen zijn er. Hopelijk ook genoeg rupsen, want die hebben de jongen hard nodig om te groeien. Maar zijn die rupsen er al? En hoeveel dan eigenlijk?
