The facility
NIOO has a collection of thousands of bacterial strains isolated from different (semi-)natural and agricultural environments. Most are bacteria isolated from soils, rhizosphere or plant parts, but aquatic strains are present as well. The added value of the collection is that multiple strains have been isolated from similar environments. This makes it interesting for constructing synthetic communities. In addition, for many strains, ecologically relevant properties have been documented such as antagonistic activities, special growth abilities (e.g. feeding on fungi), production of secondary metabolites and enzymes. The strains and relevant information are documented in a database system called Biolomics. The database is being prepared to include all isolates from the past till now. After its publication, it will be updated with new isolates. In the future, the database-system also will be used for GMOs, and DNA/RNA extracts/soil-samples etc.
