Microbes form fundamental connections between the chemical and the biological world: I am fascinated by the huge impact such small organisms have on our daily lives.

Biografie

Soil microbes are known as the 'chemical engineers' of the soil: they transform chemical compounds into forms that other organisms, like plants, can use for their metabolism. Besides being fundamental to the ecosystem to the soil, they are crucial in agriculture to provide us with food, fibre and feed. In my PhD research, I look at the role of soil microbes in agricultural systems: how do microbial communities respond to different types of land management? And how can we best study their functioning?

My project is part of 'ReGeNL' (Regenerate NL), a project consortium across the Netherlands. Together with other PhDs and researchers, our role is to provide the scientific underpinning of regenerative agriculture. My project is a collaboration between Terrestrial Ecosystems at NIOO and the Soil Biology Group at Wageningen University.
