Study site
Name Oulu
ID OUL
Country Finland
Size (ha) 800
Major site changes Yes
Latitude 65° 05' N
Latitude 25° 53' E
Number of nest boxes (min) 168
Number of nest boxes (max) 442
Vegetation Type Mixed
Description of study site The study area contains coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests of varying ages and is a part of a continuous managed forest landscape. The habitats are rapidly changing due to forestry, including clearcuttings. The main trees include birch (Betula sp.), Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris), Norway spruce (Picea abies), aspen (Populus tremula), common alder (Alnus glutinosa) and Salix species.
Species
Species Great tit, blue tit, willow tit
Start year 1969
End year NA
Continuous collection of data NA
Gap years Field effort was low in 1992-1994 (no parents were caught, no chicks were ringed, etc.)
Longest data collection 5
Parental ID's recorded Yes
List of basic breeding data collected Lay date, clutch size, hatch date of the first young, hatch date of the last young, number hatched, number unhatched eggs, causes of nesting failures at egg or nestling stage (when known), number ringed young, number fledged. Egg measurements (i.e., length, breadth, volume) of great tits were measured in 1969-1973.
Description of the protocols for breeding data collection Orell & Ojanen 1983. Ardea 71: 183-198Orell & Ojanen 1983a Ann. Zool. Fennici 20: 99 - 114
Description of the protocols for taking individual level measurements Orell 1983 Ornis Fennica 60: 65 - 82
Experimental manipulations Yes
Description of experimental manipulations
  • 1986: Brood size manipulation
  • 1987: Brood size manipulation
  • 1995: Brood size manipulation
  • 1996: Food supplementation
  • 1997: Food supplementation
  • 1998: Removing eggs from nests
  • 1999: Removing eggs from nests, chick blood sampling
Predation events recorded Yes
How are second clutches recorded? In most years, second/replacement clutches have been monitored with a similar fashion as the first broods. However, in 2000-2006 this was not done.
Catching data
Individual data Yes
Type of individual data Age, immigration status, size (mass, visible fat, wing, tail, tarsus), stage of moult.
Feeding data Yes
Type of feeding data Video nest observations, nest visits, prey items
Other catching data NA
Roosting checks No
Winter ringing Yes
Colour rings Yes
Tags No
Other Basal metabolic rate
Genetic data
Blood samples Yes
Feather samples Yes
Other samples Chick faecal samples
Samples analysed Partly
Environmental data
Food availability data Yes. Annual food abundance peaks have been quantified by sampling feces (frass) of insect larvae from the most common trees (birch, pine, spruce) to determine the timing and abundance of insect larvae during the breeding season of passerines. Existing data are available since 1996 onwards.
Temperature data Finnish Meteorological Institute.
Rainfall data Finnish Meteorological Institute.
Other environmental data Habitat quality, Remote seinsing data on habitat characteristics (see here) and habitat changes and the same based on own observations in the field
