I study marine phytoplankton–virus interactions, focusing on how environmental conditions influence viral infection, host traits, and phytoplankton competition.
After completing my bachelor’s degree in Aquarium Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, I moved to the Netherlands to further explore both freshwater and marine biology at University of Amsterdam. During this time, I became fascinated by the microscopic world of phytoplankton.
In March 2026, I joined Van de Waal group as a PhD candidate, working within the PHYVIR project. My research focuses on how viral infections alter phytoplankton functional traits and elemental stoichiometry, and how this shapes species competition under changing environmental conditions such as nutrient limitation and warming.
