Special units

For specific niches in research, NIOO has established various initiatives together with private partners and societal stakeholders. Aquatic Knowledge Centre Wageningen (AKWA) translates state-of-the art scientific knowledge into practical solutions for water issues, while the Dutch Centre for Avian Migration and Demography coordinates all data on ringed birds in the country with applications for nature management. Both are examples of 'special units' within NIOO.

Special Units

  • AKWA (Aquatic Knowledge Centre Wageningen)

    Aquatic Knowledge Centre Wageningen (AKWA) translates state-of-the art scientific knowledge into practical solutions for water issues. AKWA is an initiative of the department of Aquatic Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), together with the Aquatic Ecology & Water Quality Management Group of Wageningen UR.

  • METS (Microalgae eco-technological solutions)

    Applying ecological knowledge for nature-based solutions that improve water quality and safe valorisation of resources. That is what METS stands for.

    METS explores the potential of microalgae-bacteria biodiversity and interactions for ecological and sustainable eco-technologies. We combine knowledge on aquatic microbial ecology and environmental biotechnology, for designing engineered ecosystems that provide targeted functions (services). These include the removal of macro nutrients (N, P, etc), the recovery of carbon, macro nutrients and micro elements (Zn, Mg, etc.) and the removal of anthropogenic pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, from (waste)waters.
