The dark side of bright nights
When light pollution causes the night to disappear, a fundamental clock for life on earth is thrown out of balance. Animals and plants are threatened by artificial light. Many organisms have found their evolutionary niche in the dark of night and must now adapt to bright nights. Some succeed, but for many the brightness becomes a death trap – and causes species to die. Dedicated researchers now shed a new light on the effects of this nocturnal light on nature. Will science find solutions to the problem? -
Modeling yeast metabolism in plant phyllosphere
In this project, our primary focus will be on delving into the physiology of these less-researched yeast strains residing in the phyllosphere using computational tools, reconstruct a genome-scale metabolic model and predict carbon utilization. -
Kick off meeting National Centre for Soil Ecology
The Centre for Soil Ecology (CSE) was established in 2010 by NIOO-KNAW and WUR to bring together soil ecologists in Wageningen. However, as soil ecology is happening all across the Netherlands, there is need to transform the CSE into a National Centre for Soil Ecology (NCSE) to connect soil ecologists across the Netherlands. -

PhD thesis defence Kaiyi Wu: treating wastewater with microalgae
On 10 November, Kaiyi Wu will defend his PhD thesis titled 'Microalgae-based technology for wastewater treatment: Exploring organic micropollutants removal'. -
The Galápagos Microbiome Project: voyage of discovery to an invisible world
How unique and diverse is the invisible life of the Galápagos Islands? That is the key question to which a team of international researchers, led by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), is seeking answers. This year, they went on an expedition to the iconic islands to study the microbial life there. Insights from their research can contribute to the conservation of indigenous plant species and, in particular, Scalesia: the giant daisy. -

Bewick’s swans choose wintering areas based on the weather
Bewick’s swans fly less far during their autumn migration when the weather is warm. Climate change has therefore led to a shift in their common wintering areas. Now, for the first time, bird researchers have been able to use long-term GPS data to pinpoint the specific choices that individual swans make. -
Observations National Soil Animal Days 2023
Every year around World Animal Day, it's time to go on safari in your own garden - looking for the all-important but often overlooked soil animals. 2023 will mark the 9th edition of the Dutch Soil Animal Days. The annual event, organised by NIOO and a growing number of partners, is still welcoming observations. All observations up to and including 31 October will count for the national Soil Animal Top 3 of 2023.
