The facility

The molecular laboratories offer a wide range of facilities needed for handling, preparing and analysing a wide variety of DNA and/or RNA samples. The lab is well-equipped, and in addition to the general molecular laboratory there are several specialised laboratories such as an MLII Lab, an RNA Lab and a PCR lab with UV-cupboards.

Research topics

The lab is shared and used by all four research departments. There is expertise to work with animal and plant material, viruses and micro-organisms (GMOs).

Equipment / facilities

  • All standard equipment necessary for isolating (high molecular weight) DNA and RNA
  • 2 lysis systems available: Tissue Lyser II (Qiagen) and a FastPrep-24 5G (MP Biomedicals)
  • For measuring quality of the DNA or RNA, there is a Nanodrop 2000 (Thermo), Qubit 3.0 (Invitrogen) and a Fragment analyser 5200 (Agilent)
  • PCR-machines C1000 Touch (Biorad) and qPCR-machines CFX Touch (Biorad)
  • Gel Jet imager (Isogen) to visualise an agrose gel

Data management

Data derived from analyses conducted at the molecular lab is stored in specific locations on a dedicated bioinformatics server. Data administration is done by data admins for each department.

Conditions for access

Access is primarily for researchers from NIOO-KNAW. In collaborative projects, the molecular lab can also be used by external researchers. In such cases, an agreement between NIOO and the collaboration partner will be made. Bench fees will apply.
