As a research assistant in the Animal Ecology department, I contribute to breeding bird research in De Hoge Veluwe and conduct genetic research in the molecular laboratory. What I particularly value about working at NIOO-KNAW is the opportunity to engage in work I am passionate about while contributing to meaningful research.
My fascination with animals and ecology has been the guiding thread throughout my career. After completing my education as a veterinary technician, I earned a degree in Applied Biology at HAS Green Academy, specializing in ecological and avian research.
During my studie, I gained valuable international research experience. In collaboration with the Centre for Biodiversity Dynamics at NTNU in Norway, I studied the density-dependent effects on the breeding success of a metapopulation of house sparrows. I also conducted a study in Belgium on the effect of egg marking on the breeding success of Japanese quail. Additionally, I participated in the Save the Grassland, Save the Tiger, Save the Water project in Nepal, classifying grassland and forest types for remote sensing techniques to support conservation efforts.
Alongside my experience with nest box monitoring in Norway, I volunteered in the Netherlands for the RAS starling project from Sovon. For the past six years, I have worked with softbills, gaining hands-on experience with birds and knowledge of their behavior and nutrition.
At NIOO-KNAW, I am the field captain for breeding bird research in the Hoge Veluwe during the breeding season. In addition, I conduct genetic research in the molecular lab. I am eager to further develop my knowledge while contributing to both fundamental and strategisch research with a real-world conservation impact.
