Major site changes Yes. In the first year, 1941, the number of boxes was small, ca. 10, and they were concentrated near the country estate of Lempisaari, but the number gradually increased up to ca. 100 in 1953, and the boxes became spreard around the island.

Vegetation Type Mixed. Coniferous-forest dominated landscape with scattered agricultural fields. The forests in the area are dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), which forms mixed stands with spruce (Picea abies), birch (Betula spp.) and oak (Quercus robur).
Description of study site

The data are based on the nestcards filled by prof. Lars von Haartman. Original nest cards are stored in the Finnish Museum of Natural History (Helsinki). During the early years, 1941-1950, the nestcards were only filled for pied flycatcher, although a few pairs of great tit is known to breed in the area. Sometimes the handwriting and abbreviations in the cards are hard to interpret. Basic description of the study sites can be found in:

Description of the protocols for breeding data collection Nest boxes were normally checked weekly to record final clutch size, number of nestlings, and to ring parents and nestlings. First egg laying date was calculated back from the number of non-incubated eggs.
