09/04/2021 Op een voormalige akker bij Almere zijn Isabelle van der Zanden en Ciska Veen van het NIOO begonnen met een nieuw wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Micro-organisms living inside plant roots team up to boost the plant’s growth and tolerance to stress. This research is featured this week in the scientific journal Science.

Micro-organismen die in plantenwortels leven, werken nauw samen met planten om hun groei en stressbestendigheid te vergroten. Dit onderzoek staat deze week zien in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Science.

Leaf-feeding caterpillars greatly enrich their intestinal flora by eating soil. It's even possible to trace the legacy effects of plants that previously grew in that soil through bacteria and fungi in the caterpillars.

Bladetende rupsen blijken hun darmflora sterk te verrijken door het eten van grond. Je ziet zo zelfs effecten van planten die eerder in die grond groeiden als ‘erfenis’ terug in de bacteriën en schimmels in rupsen.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie NIOO-KNAW krijgt een ‘voedselbos’. Medewerkers van het NIOO planten op het terrein een groot aantal eetbare soorten. Kunstmest of bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn niet nodig, omdat gewerkt wordt volgens de ecologische principes van een natuurlijk bos.

WAGENINGEN – The Netherlands Institute of Ecology is to have its own 'food forest'. Researchers and students have begun planting a variety of fruits, vegetables and other edible plant species in the grounds around the NIOO building. No fertilizers are being used: the principles of a natural forest apply. In the future, fruits from the agroforest will be served in the NIOO canteen.
