Despite its many secrets and wonders, oceans have been under threat for years. Corals are dying and sea life is disappearing. Although this is a global phenomenon, some people are affected more than othersāand as with many a climate issue, these inequalities bear witness of the afterlife of (post)colonialism. In this talk, we shed light on the ambiguous nature of marine protection and the colonial dimensions of ocean health. -

De brandgans blijkt zich sneller aan te kunnen passen dan gedacht. De dieren die door veranderingen in landgebruik besluiten om in Nederland te broeden, zijn ongeveer even succesvol als hun soortgenoten die nog wel de tocht naar het Hoge Noorden wagen. En dat biedt kansen voor de natuur, stelt Chiel Boom van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW). Hij promoveert vandaag bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam. -
Impression of the King's visit to NIOO
Earlier this month, His Royal Highness King Willem-Alexander paid a working visit to the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). The visit included a tour, an introduction to NIOO's three major research themes, and a number of hands-on ecological measurements and experiments in which the King took part.
