WAGENINGEN – The Netherlands Institute of Ecology is to have its own 'food forest'. Researchers and students have begun planting a variety of fruits, vegetables and other edible plant species in the grounds around the NIOO building. No fertilizers are being used: the principles of a natural forest apply. In the future, fruits from the agroforest will be served in the NIOO canteen.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie NIOO-KNAW krijgt een ‘voedselbos’. Medewerkers van het NIOO planten op het terrein een groot aantal eetbare soorten. Kunstmest of bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn niet nodig, omdat gewerkt wordt volgens de ecologische principes van een natuurlijk bos.

Fields and meadows provide a range of key services, as long as the soil is healthy. A group of researchers and companies will study how farmlands can be returned to multifunctionality.

Akkers en weiden kunnen behalve voedsel nog veel meer diensten leveren, als het bodemleven gezond is. Een groep onderzoekers en bedrijven gaat bekijken hoe landbouwgronden hun multifunctionaliteit terug kunnen krijgen.

Epigenetics is a fast-growing field of research all over the world. Ecological epigenetics has now been further advanced thanks to the development of a new research technique. ‘This technique is cheaper and faster and enables research that was previously impossible to conduct.’ The time has come to look at how important epigenetic changes really are for dealing with climate change, plagues and other stress-factors. The research team led by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) is publishing its technique in the scientific journal Nature Methods.

Het vakgebied van de epigenetica is internationaal booming. Ook binnen de ecologie, waar het nu eindelijk volwassen is door een nieuwe onderzoekstechniek. “Het is goedkoper, sneller en je kunt onderzoek doen dat eerder onmogelijk was.” Tijd om te kijken hoe belangrijk epigenetische veranderingen precies zijn voor het omgaan met klimaatverandering, plagen en andere stress. De onderzoekers publiceren nu onder leiding van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) hun techniek in Nature Methods.
