Adaptation of species
During recent centuries, human activities have dramatically changed the habitats of wild animals, plants and micro-organisms. Ecologists at NIOO are interested in how species can adapt to these rapid changes, for example through (micro)evolution. The ability of organisms to do this has a major impact on biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems. -

De afgelopen eeuwen hebben activiteiten van de mens de leefomgevingen van wilde dieren, planten en micro-organismen indringend veranderd. Ecologen van het NIOO zijn geĆÆnteresseerd in hoe soorten zich aan deze snelle veranderingen kunnen aanpassen, bijvoorbeeld door (micro)evolutie. Earlier this month, His Royal Highness King Willem-Alexander paid a working visit to the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). The visit included a tour, an introduction to NIOO's three major research themes, and a number of hands-on ecological measurements and experiments in which the King took part. -
