WAGENINGEN – The Netherlands Institute of Ecology is to have its own 'food forest'. Researchers and students have begun planting a variety of fruits, vegetables and other edible plant species in the grounds around the NIOO building. No fertilizers are being used: the principles of a natural forest apply. In the future, fruits from the agroforest will be served in the NIOO canteen.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie NIOO-KNAW krijgt een ‘voedselbos’. Medewerkers van het NIOO planten op het terrein een groot aantal eetbare soorten. Kunstmest of bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn niet nodig, omdat gewerkt wordt volgens de ecologische principes van een natuurlijk bos.

It's a hidden global change: away from the public eye, residues of medicines in water have been causing increasing disruption. They can kill aquatic animals, and play havoc with their food web and reproductive cycle. An international team of researchers led by the NIOO makes an urgent case for better wastewater treatment and biodegradable pharmaceuticals.

Klimaatverandering kent iedereen inmiddels wel. Maar er is ook een andere verandering gaande, die tot nu toe vooral verborgen haar verstorende werk deed. Het gaat om resten van geneesmiddelen die in het water de chemische communicatie op zijn kop zetten. Het effect? Een verstoorde voortplanting of voedselketen bijvoorbeeld, of zelfs direct de dood van waterdieren. Een internationaal team onder leiding van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) maakt nu de urgentie duidelijk voor betere afvalwaterzuivering en biologisch afbreekbare medicijnen.

Thiacloprid, a widely-used pesticide, can cause a large-scale decline in freshwater insects. This was discovered by a team of researchers from Leiden University, including current NIOO-director Geert de Snoo.
