Nearly 1000 'citizen scientists' sent in their observations this year on Soil Animal Days 2019. And a surprisingly high number of people tried to do something in return for the vital services these soil creatures provide for us.

When it comes to their role in aquatic ecosystems, exotic water plants are generally no different than indigenous species. In fact, they can be an asset, argues Bart Grutters (NIOO-KNAW) in his PhD thesis. That doesn't mean all exotic species should be given free rein. But they can be managed more effectively if you focus on their properties and not their place of origin.

Exotische waterplanten blijken gemiddeld niet te verschillen van inheemse soorten als je naar hun functie in de natuur kijkt. Ze bieden geregeld zelfs meerwaarde. Dit betekent geen vrijbrief voor alle exoten. Wel maakt het effectiever beheer mogelijk gebaseerd op eigenschappen van een plant in plaats van herkomst. Op dit onderzoek promoveerde Bart Grutters van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) op woensdag 5 april.

Leren over de exoten in de Nederlandse natuur, terwijl je een coole game speelt. Dat is vanaf nu mogelijk met de Exoten Game, die vandaag werd gepresenteerd in het Bezoekerscentrum De Kennemerduinen in Overveen. De game is een gezamenlijk project van drinkwaterbedrijf PWN, het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en visueel communicatiebureau iTZiT.

The conversion of Amazon rainforest for agriculture has led to deforestation and soil degradation. Agroforestry has been suggested as a sustainable alternative, but NIOO's Eiko Kuramae says its impact on the soil needs to be more fully considered.
