It’s no secret that many insects are struggling worldwide. But we could fix these insects’ problems, according to more than 70 scientists from 21 countries. It's up to water managers to limit the inconvenience for swimmers, boats and fishermen in a way that is both responsible and cost-effective. Michiel Verhofstad defended his PhD thesis this week on the 'root' causes of the problem, and how best to tackle it.

En vooral de waterbeheerders die de overlast voor zwemmers, bootjes, doorstroming en vissers binnen de perken moeten houden op een goede en betaalbare manier. Michiel Verhofstad van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) onderzocht waar de overlast vandaan komt en hoe je die het beste kunt aanpakken. Hij promoveert vandaag in Utrecht.

But, they also provide ways to help insects in a warming world complete with management strategies.

“Als we nu geen actie ondernemen om de impact van klimaatverandering op insecten beter te begrijpen en te verminderen, dan beperken we onze kansen op een duurzame toekomst met gezonde ecosystemen drastisch.” Deze boodschap komt uit het heel actuele wetenschappelijke artikel in Ecological Monographs vandaag, van 70 onderzoekers uit 19 landen en geleid door het NIOO. Gelukkig geven ze ook oplossingen aan om insecten te helpen in een opwarmende wereld, compleet met managementstrategieën.
