Migratory birds are often blamed for spreading avian influenza. But new research proves for a specific flu type that instead of importing the virus into the Netherlands, migratory mallards actually contract it here. NIOO-researcher Jacintha van Dijk defends her thesis on the topic at Utrecht University on Wednesday.

WAGENINGEN / UTRECHT – Trekvogels werden nogal eens verfoeid als het om vogelgriep ging. Nu blijkt dat ze het virus waarschijnlijk niet ons land inbrengen maar het hier juist oplopen, in ieder geval bij het onderzochte grieptype bij wilde eenden. Woensdag 8 oktober promoveert dierecoloog Jacintha van Dijk van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) hierop bij Universiteit Utrecht.

Melissah Rowe van het NIOO-KNAW laat deze week in het tijdschrift Trends in Ecology & Evolution zien wat de impact is van micro-organismen bij de voortplanting.
