In the journal Nature Plants, the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) and Natuurmonumenten (Society for Nature Conservation) also solve a long-lasting subject of discussion: it’s the soil bugs that steer such nature restoration.

Natuurherstel en natuurontwikkeling kosten veel tijd. Het duurt lang voordat de gewenste soorten opduiken. Experimenten laten zien dat bodemtransplantatie dit aanzienlijk kan versnellen: van een paar decennia naar een paar jaar. Deze kennis is nu beschikbaar voor de praktijk, op een overzichtssite van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW). Daarnaast promoveert deze woensdag een van de betrokken onderzoekers op dit uitstrooien of ‘transplanteren’ van dunne lagen bodem uit natuurlijk ‘donorgebied’.

NIOO-onderzoeker Wietse de Boer is met ingang van dit jaar buitengewoon hoogleraar Microbiële Bodemecologie aan Wageningen University. Op 14 februari sprak hij zijn inaugurele rede uit. Die is onlangs verschenen in boekvorm.
