Ever wonder what makes soil, soil? And could soil from the Amazon rainforest really be the same as soil from your garden? Researchers from the University of Manchester and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) are using DNA sequencing to unlock the secrets of the world’s soils, and analyse ecological patterns and microbial communities on a global scale.

Zoveel landen, zoveel bodems... Hoe weet je wat wat is, en hoe je die bodem ‘gezond’ houdt? Wereldwijd onderzoek onder leiding van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) laat zien, dat vooral zeldzame bodembacteriën een nieuwe sleutel bieden voor het onderscheiden en vervolgens goed beheren van onze aarde. De resultaten staan deze week alvast online bij het tijdschrift Nature Microbiology.

Earlier this month, His Royal Highness King Willem-Alexander paid a working visit to the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). The visit included a tour, an introduction to NIOO's three major research themes, and a number of hands-on ecological measurements and experiments in which the King took part.

Koning Willem-Alexander bracht vandaag een werkbezoek aan het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen. Naast een rondleiding kreeg de Koning uitleg over de onderzoeksthema's van het NIOO én nam hij deel aan een aantal praktische metingen en experimenten.

The conversion of Amazon rainforest for agriculture has led to deforestation and soil degradation. Agroforestry has been suggested as a sustainable alternative, but NIOO's Eiko Kuramae says its impact on the soil needs to be more fully considered.

In het Amazonegebied moet veel bos plaatsmaken voor landbouw. Bij boslandbouw gaan gewassen samen met bomen en dieren. Is dat inderdaad een duurzaam alternatief - ook voor de bodem, vragen Eiko Kuramae en Márcio Leite in Global Change Biology.
