Consortium investigates nature-inclusive use of floating solar panels
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded more than 2.8 million euros to a consortium led by NIOO's Sven Teurlincx that will investigate the use of floating solar panels. It aims to establish the technological, ecological and social conditions for floating solar energy to have a sustainable future - for people as well as nature, in different landscapes. -
Is agroforestry the answer for rainforest restoration?
The conversion of Amazon rainforest for agriculture has led to deforestation and soil degradation. Agroforestry has been suggested as a sustainable alternative, but NIOO's Eiko Kuramae says its impact on the soil needs to be more fully considered. -
Awakening sleeping antibiotics with ERC Advanced grant
Facilitating the search for new antibiotics: that's what Gilles van Wezel aims to do by looking at similarities in the DNA of antibiotic-producing bacteria. -
What makes soil, soil? Researchers find hidden clues in DNA
Ever wonder what makes soil, soil? And could soil from the Amazon rainforest really be the same as soil from your garden? Researchers from the University of Manchester and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) are using DNA sequencing to unlock the secrets of the worldās soils, and analyse ecological patterns and microbial communities on a global scale. -
Zeldzame bacteriƫn helpen bodems wereldwijd te herkennen
Zoveel landen, zoveel bodems...
