It's a hidden global change: away from the public eye, residues of medicines in water have been causing increasing disruption. They can kill aquatic animals, and play havoc with their food web and reproductive cycle. An international team of researchers led by the NIOO makes an urgent case for better wastewater treatment and biodegradable pharmaceuticals.

Klimaatverandering kent iedereen inmiddels wel. Maar er is ook een andere verandering gaande, die tot nu toe vooral verborgen haar verstorende werk deed. Het gaat om resten van geneesmiddelen die in het water de chemische communicatie op zijn kop zetten. Het effect? Een verstoorde voortplanting of voedselketen bijvoorbeeld, of zelfs direct de dood van waterdieren. Een internationaal team onder leiding van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) maakt nu de urgentie duidelijk voor betere afvalwaterzuivering en biologisch afbreekbare medicijnen.

Artificial light at night can have a disruptive effect on bats, but not if the light is red. Switching to red light may therefore limit or prevent habitat loss for rare, light-shy bat species. The latest issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B publishes results from five years of pioneering research led by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW).

Nachtelijk kunstlicht verstoort vleermuizen sterk, behalve als het rood is. Het verlies van leefgebied voor de zeldzamere, lichtschuwe soorten kan daardoor met deze lichtkleur waarschijnlijk verminderd of voorkomen worden. Dit volgt uit vijf jaar uniek onderzoek van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en Wageningen University, dat vandaag verschijnt in de Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Kamiel Spoelstra is this year's winner of the Stairway to Impact Award. The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded him the prize for his contribution towards the acquisition and propagation of knowledge about the impact of artificial light on flora and fauna.
