Every year around World Animal Day, it's time to go on safari in your own garden - looking for the all-important but often overlooked soil animals. 2023 will mark the 9th edition of the Dutch Soil Animal Days. The annual event, organised by NIOO and a growing number of partners, is still welcoming observations. Leaf-feeding caterpillars greatly enrich their intestinal flora by eating soil. It's even possible to trace the legacy effects of plants that previously grew in that soil through bacteria and fungi in the caterpillars. -

Bladetende rupsen blijken hun darmflora sterk te verrijken door het eten van grond. Je ziet zo zelfs effecten van planten die eerder in die grond groeiden als āerfenisā terug in de bacteriĆ«n en schimmels in rupsen.
