The core of a microbiome is defined as the minimum community of microbes that is essential for the good functioning of ecosystem. This concept that is mostly applied to the gut ecosystem, may also be applicable to soil. Here we raise the research question on the existence of a soil core microbiome or on the existence of a soil microbial core function supported by a variable community.
