Sugarcane crops in Brazil grow with less nitrogen fertilizers than other biofuel crops, resulting into lower levels of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. However, there is lack of real measurements of GHG emissions associated with the production ethanol. In addition, there is a lack of knowledge of the main players of fundamental biogeochemical processes, the soil biota, which can control fluxes of GHG.
