Experimental manipulations

AnE has acces to many techniques that are used in field based studies with hole-breeding passerines. To research the relationship between specific traits and fitness, there is a wide range of techniques available depending on the sort of study.

For songbirds we use sound equipment that can be played back on certain time frames. This is of interest for territorial and partner behaviour.
One of our projects, called 'Networking with Songbirds', presents a video impression about their work on social networks.

Other experimental manipulations have been executed on for example brood size. Changing the number of eggs or nestlings, or advancing and delaying the lay date of breeding birds. The use of dummy eggs gives us access to manipulate the breeding pair and their breeding success.
