NETLAKE (Networking Lake Observatories in Europe) is an EU COST Action (ES 1201) that aims to build a network of sites and individuals to support the development and deployment of sensor-based systems in lakes and reservoirs, and promote their use to address both current and future water quality issues in Europe.

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is Europe’s longest-running intergovernmental framework for cooperation in science and technology funding cooperative scientific projects called 'COST Actions'. With a successful history of implementing scientific networking projects for over 40 years, COST offers scientists the opportunity to embark upon bottom-up, multidisciplinary and collaborative networks across all science and technology domains.

Within NETLAKE, five working groups have been established, each aiming or focusing on a different aspects within lake and reservoir ecology. Working Group 3 focuses on the establishment of a Europe-wide citizen science initiative. This has two core areas: a local schools-based project (2014) and a citizen recorder project (2015-2016-2017). The science questions addressed can be found under the Scientific Background tab. These questions are relevant to real day-to-day management and have been designed to inform and educate local end-users of key processes in lakes.
