I am a multifaceted life scientist with a keen interest in understanding the way living systems operate and interact with each other. My passion is also to create knowledge that can be used to
improve people’s life, specifically by improving farming practices in developing countries such as my homeland Ethiopia. My main research interests are:
    1) Rhizosphere and microbiome research related to alteration of plant physiology, biochemistry and adaptation.
    2) Unraveling the regulatory mechanisms of growth/defence trade-off in plant-microbe/pest interaction

Deciphering the microbiome of fish eggs to mitigate emerging diseases in aquaculture
In aquaculture, diseases caused by the fungal-like oomycete Saprolegnia, but also ectoparasites are causing significant declines in fish and crayfish populations. To date, these diseases are controlled in aquaculture mainly by formalin treatment. However, the use of formalin will be banned in the...Read more
Genomic and functional characterization of beneficial bacteria from natural disease suppressive soils
Disease-suppressive soils are ecosystems in which crop plants suffer less from specific diseases than expected owing to the activities of antagonistic soil microorganisms. For most disease-suppressive soils the beneficial microbes and mechanisms involved in pathogen control are unknown. Members of...Read more
    Volatile affairs in the rhizosphere
Volatile compounds play important roles in rhizosphere interactions. The goal of this project is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying volatile-mediated communication between plants, bacteria and fungi. To achieve that, we couple volatile profiling, plant transcriptomics and...Read more
