The aim of this project is to obtain a mechanistic understanding of specific litter-decomposer interactions and their feedback effects on plant growth. We combine field and greenhouse experiments with state-of-the-art molecular techniques and chemical analyses to measure changes in species composition and functioning in the microbial community on plant litter in different soils. Knowledge gained in this project is fundamental to understand the consequences of global climate change and rapid changes in community composition on ecosystem functioning, as altered environmental conditions may result in decoupling specific litter-decomposer interactions.
