Exposition 'Augmented Ecofeminisms: Climate, Water and Women'
This month at NIOO: the art exhibition 'Augmented Ecofeminisms: Climate, Water, and Women'. This exhibition illustrates how the problems associated with climate change differentially affect women in many parts of the world. -
Dealing with bluegreen algae
Worldwide, excessive nutrient loads in lakes and reservoirs have led to the rapid increase of harmful cyanobacteria. Blooms of these algae block the use of surface water for drinking, irrigation and recreation. Climate change is expected to further increase the frequency, duration, and magnitude of cyanobacterial blooms. Aquatic ecologists from NIOO are busy gaining more detailed insights into cyanobacterial blooms across scales, in future climates and in respect to toxicity. -
Greenhouse gasses
Climate change is amplified by greenhouse gas emissions. At NIOO, we aim to gain a fundamental understanding of how gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide influence ecosystems. Varying from the microbiome of a plant root to a Dutch fresh water pond or an entire tropical rain forest. -
Book presentation on Water farming
On Friday afternoon 29 September, a new book about Water farming will be presented at NIOO. NIOO scientists Ellen Weerman and Ellen van Donk are two of the editors, and you are very welcome to join. The presentation will be in Dutch. -
Follow-up funding for microbial fight against parasitic weed in Africa
Can micro-organisms in the soil help the fight against parasitic weeds in Africa? That question launched Promise six years ago. After promising initial results, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has now awarded follow-up funding to the project. -
Is agroforestry the answer for rainforest restoration?
The conversion of Amazon rainforest for agriculture has led to deforestation and soil degradation. Agroforestry has been suggested as a sustainable alternative, but NIOO's Eiko Kuramae says its impact on the soil needs to be more fully considered. -
Spotlight on living soil at COP15 biodiversity conference
The UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal (COP15) is discussing global action to reverse biodiversity loss. Healthy, living soil is of key importance. -
Knowledge Day: Thermal energy from surface water and its ecological effects
The WarmingUP project, STOWA and water managers will present their findings on the ecological effects of thermal energy from surface water during a 'knowledge day' hosted by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) on 10 November. -

NIOO Theme Sustainable use of land and water
Healthy surface water and soils are essential for life on earth. They provide a range of life-supporting functions, including carbon storage, oxygen generation, and nutrient cycling. At NIOO, we combine research on the ecosystem services provided to society with research on how these ecosystem services are impacted by society.
