  3. 10th edition IVN Dutch Ditch Days

    The 10th edition of the IVN Dutch Ditch Days will take place between 10 and 16 June 2024. During these days, IVN guides children in taking a closer look at the aquatic animals and plantlife in Dutch ditches. NIOO uses the observations the children make to study the water quality.

  4. How genetic research contributes to effective lion conservation

    News
    Human measures to protect lions have an impact on the genetic health of populations. Dutch and Kenyan scientists discovered this by analysing the DNA of 171 Kenyan lions. "By fencing reserves, for example, the chance of inbreeding increases." With the knowledge and tools from the research, management authorities in Kenya can better protect their valuable wildlife in the future.

  10. NIOO Theme Biodiversity

    In order to protect, or restore biodiversity, it is crucial to consider all forms of life within their entire context. The strength of NIOO-based research is that it integrates all of the different levels and scales that make up biodiversity, from genetic diversity to species diversity, from small to large organisms, from trophic interactions to communities and ecosystems, and in a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Therefore, NIOO is in the right position to make a substantial and scientifically important contribution to the societal goal of the SDGs.
