How genetic research contributes to effective lion conservation
Human measures to protect lions have an impact on the genetic health of populations. Dutch and Kenyan scientists discovered this by analysing the DNA of 171 Kenyan lions. "By fencing reserves, for example, the chance of inbreeding increases." With the knowledge and tools from the research, management authorities in Kenya can better protect their valuable wildlife in the future.

Biodiversity on the NIOO terrain
At NIOO we strive to stimulate the biodiversity on the green roofs and the terrain. On the occasion of NIOO’s 68th birthday, colleagues launched a BioBlitz: a period of biological surveying to record the living species within a designated area. -
The Centre for Soil Ecology goes national
Today, on World Soil Day, it is the perfect moment to present the new National Centre for Soil Ecology. All soil ecologists working in the Netherlands can now connect to the initiative that originally started in Wageningen. -
National Soil Animal Days 2024
Every year around World Animal Day, we go on safari in our own gardens looking for the important but often overlooked soil animals. This year marks the 10th edition of the Soil Animal Days. -
Wim van der Putten and Jos Raaijmakers named 'Highly Cited Researcher' for sixth year running
Clarivate Analytics has published its annual list of highly cited researchers. NIOO-researchers Jos Raaijmakers and Wim van der Putten are included for the sixth year running. -
Kick off meeting National Centre for Soil Ecology
The Centre for Soil Ecology (CSE) was established in 2010 by NIOO-KNAW and WUR to bring together soil ecologists in Wageningen. However, as soil ecology is happening all across the Netherlands, there is need to transform the CSE into a National Centre for Soil Ecology (NCSE) to connect soil ecologists across the Netherlands. -
Observations National Soil Animal Days 2023
Every year around World Animal Day, it's time to go on safari in your own garden - looking for the all-important but often overlooked soil animals. 2023 will mark the 9th edition of the Dutch Soil Animal Days. The annual event, organised by NIOO and a growing number of partners, is still welcoming observations. BiodiversityXL Community Event at NIOO
The next BiodiversityXL Community Event is coming up soon and this time it's going to be at NIOO! -
Soil multifunctionality: from biodiversity associations to understanding mechanisms (MultiSol)
My MSCA-project will elucidate the mechanisms underlying trade-offs and synergies among soil functions and reveal how differences among soils drive differences in soil multifunctionality.
