Suzanne McGowan appointed Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics
Meet the new Special Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics: Suzanne McGowan. As of 2024 she is appointed at Utrecht University. Her chair offers a unique combination between the university's faculties of Science and Geosciences. McGowan integrates this with her main affiliation as the Head of Aquatic Ecology at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). As a professor, she aims to uncover how water ecosystems have been functioning, and how the major changes on our planet affect this. -
National Soil Animal Days 2024
Every year around World Animal Day, we go on safari in our own gardens looking for the important but often overlooked soil animals. This year marks the 10th edition of the Soil Animal Days. -
Observations National Soil Animal Days 2023
Every year around World Animal Day, it's time to go on safari in your own garden - looking for the all-important but often overlooked soil animals. 2023 will mark the 9th edition of the Dutch Soil Animal Days. Stairway to Impact Award for Kamiel Spoelstra
Kamiel Spoelstra is this year's winner of the Stairway to Impact Award. The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded him the prize for his contribution towards the acquisition and propagation of knowledge about the impact of artificial light on flora and fauna. -
Sperm biology and evolution (thesis/internship projects)
Sperm are critical to successful fertilisation in sexually reproducing animals. The function of sperm – to find and fertilise ova – is universal throughout the animal kingdom, yet the sperm cell is the most morphologically diverse cell type known. -
Light on Nature
We produce more and more light at night. Virtually everybody in Europe or the US lives in a light polluted place: all areas where artificial light always exceeds the light of the moon and the stars. These areas expand with about two percent per year, while already light polluted areas become even brighter at night. -
Multifunctional grounds
Besides the latest ecotechnology, the grounds also feature aviaries, ponds, greenhouses and experimental gardens. -
A living, breathing building
As sustainable as possible, in as many respects as possible: that was the imperative when the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) commissioned a new building. And we have done it! -
Artificial light
Nocturnal illumination leads to a permanent disturbance of natural habitats and there is accumulating evidence for – often negative – impact of artificial light in an increasing number of species.
