Suzanne McGowan appointed Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics
Meet the new Special Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics: Suzanne McGowan. As of 2024 she is appointed at Utrecht University. Her chair offers a unique combination between the university's faculties of Science and Geosciences. McGowan integrates this with her main affiliation as the Head of Aquatic Ecology at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). As a professor, she aims to uncover how water ecosystems have been functioning, and how the major changes on our planet affect this. -
Bewick’s swans choose wintering areas based on the weather
Bewick’s swans fly less far during their autumn migration when the weather is warm. Climate change has therefore led to a shift in their common wintering areas. Now, for the first time, bird researchers have been able to use long-term GPS data to pinpoint the specific choices that individual swans make. -
Symposium Migratory birds under pressure
On Thursday 7 September 2023 our Animal Ecology department is organising a symposium on migratory birds under pressure, followed by the PhD thesis defence of Kees Schreven the next day. -
PhD Thesis defence Kees Schreven: range expansion in Arctic-breeding geese
On Friday 8 September 2023, our colleague Kees Schreven will defend his PhD thesis "Geese colonising New Land: causes and mechanisms of range expansion in an Arctic-breeding migrant". -
Open Dagen bij het NIOO
Het NIOO houdt regelmatig Open Dagen om te laten zien hoe we onderzoek doen. Op 7 oktober is het weer zover. -
A living, breathing building
As sustainable as possible, in as many respects as possible: that was the imperative when the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) commissioned a new building. And we have done it! -
Ecofactsheet: migratory birds & bird flu
The strain of bird flu responsible for the recent outbreak in the Netherlands is a highly pathogenic form of H5N8. -
Research among mallards proves: migratory birds don't import bird flu but contract it here
Migratory birds are often blamed for spreading avian influenza. But new research proves for a specific flu type that instead of importing the virus into the Netherlands, migratory mallards actually contract it here. NIOO-researcher Jacintha van Dijk defends her thesis on the topic at Utrecht University on Wednesday. -
Migratory animals create worldwide ecosystem
WAGENINGEN – In the animal kingdom, travel is key: that is the conclusion of Silke Bauer’s research in a nutshell. The NIOO-ecologist and an Australian colleague list the numerous species that migrate from one location to another. According to the two researchers, the effects of these migrations on world ecosystems have been overlooked. Time to give the billions of geese, locusts, butterflies, herrings and wildebeest that wander the globe their proper due. -
Research on ecosystems of the future has started
What will happen when a plant moves to higher latitudes driven by climate change, potentially leaving behind friends and foes?
