The Centre for Soil Ecology goes national
Today, on World Soil Day, it is the perfect moment to present the new National Centre for Soil Ecology. All soil ecologists working in the Netherlands can now connect to the initiative that originally started in Wageningen. -
Kick off meeting National Centre for Soil Ecology
The Centre for Soil Ecology (CSE) was established in 2010 by NIOO-KNAW and WUR to bring together soil ecologists in Wageningen. However, as soil ecology is happening all across the Netherlands, there is need to transform the CSE into a National Centre for Soil Ecology (NCSE) to connect soil ecologists across the Netherlands. -
Fireworks have long-lasting effects on wild birds
An international team of scientists has examined the long-term effects of fireworks on wild birds. -
PhD defence Melanie Lindner: Bird reproduction in a warming world
Melanie Lindner will defend her PhD thesis titled "Avian seasonal reproduction in times of global warming: Insights from evolution, ecology and (epi-)genomics" -
Thesis defence Bernice Sepers: the role of DNA methylation variation in avian personality
On 28 October, Bernice Sepers (Animal Ecology) will defend her thesis on 'Behavioural epigenetics: insights into the role of heritable and induced DNA methylation variation in avian personality' at Wageningen UR. -
Getting to know your 'downstairs' neighbours
Between 23 September and 5 October, we're asking you to go on a safari in your own garden, do the survey, and spread the word to as many people as possible. -
A living, breathing building
As sustainable as possible, in as many respects as possible: that was the imperative when the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) commissioned a new building. And we have done it! -
NIOO Theme Biodiversity
In order to protect, or restore biodiversity, it is crucial to consider all forms of life within their entire context. The strength of NIOO-based research is that it integrates all of the different levels and scales that make up biodiversity, from genetic diversity to species diversity, from small to large organisms, from trophic interactions to communities and ecosystems, and in a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Therefore, NIOO is in the right position to make a substantial and scientifically important contribution to the societal goal of the SDGs. -
Light Pollution
Illumination of forest edges leads to a decrease in moth numbers and changes in the behaviour and success of bigger day as well as night-active animals in the long run. What did we find out at NIOO and what can we do with these results? -
Biodiversity
What do we need to know to stop biodiversity decline, at all levels of life ranging from genes, species, communities, habitats to entire ecosystems?
