BiodiversityXL Community Event at NIOO
The next BiodiversityXL Community Event is coming up soon and this time it's going to be at NIOO! -
Developing digital twins to help understand ecosystems
LTER-LIFE aims to study and predict how global change affects ecosystems. It is one of nine projects that have just won funding for setting up and improving large-scale research infrastructure. -
Inaugural lecture by Dr. Ellen Weerman
On 2 February 2023, Dr. Ellen Weerman will give her inaugural lecture as lecturer on 'climate robust' landscapes at NIOO and HAS Green Academy. The title of the lecture is 'Climate-robust landscapes: how to bring resilience back into the landscape'. -
Biodiversity XL Live: The Sound of Biodiversity
Yet another fascinating episode is coming up for the BiodiversityXL Live short livestream series: the Sound of Biodiversity! More and more different approaches and techniques are used, in the hope to gain more knowledge about biodiversity. They help us to look very detailed at individuals, species and ecosystems. But let's not forget about our ears. Sound can tell a lot about the presence of species, but also about their behaviour. Sounds we can hear, like bird songs, but also sounds we can not hear. How do we monitor biodiversity via sound? -
A living, breathing building
As sustainable as possible, in as many respects as possible: that was the imperative when the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) commissioned a new building. And we have done it! -
NIOO Theme Biodiversity
In order to protect, or restore biodiversity, it is crucial to consider all forms of life within their entire context. The strength of NIOO-based research is that it integrates all of the different levels and scales that make up biodiversity, from genetic diversity to species diversity, from small to large organisms, from trophic interactions to communities and ecosystems, and in a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Therefore, NIOO is in the right position to make a substantial and scientifically important contribution to the societal goal of the SDGs. -
Biodiversity
What do we need to know to stop biodiversity decline, at all levels of life ranging from genes, species, communities, habitats to entire ecosystems? -
Centre of Excellence launched at Naturalis Biodiversity Gala
02/10/2020 At the Naturalis Biodiversity Gala, NIOO-director Geert de Snoo presented the new Centre of Excellence for Netherlands Biodiversity Research: a joint venture that brings together four leading Dutch knowledge institutes. -
Nationwide approach to boosting knowledge of biodiversity in the Netherlands
10/07/2020 To boost knowledge about biodiversity in the Netherlands, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, NIOO-KNAW, NIOZ-NWO and Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute have joined forces. -
Testing early warning signals for crises, in lakes
Wouldn't it be great if we could tell the state of an ecosystem or the like - healthy or heading for a crisis - by keeping track of a few key signals? Thanks to the theory of ‘tipping points’, that’s not unthinkable. Now a team of researchers led by Alena Gsell of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) has tested early warning signals: in lakes. In the Early Edition of PNAS online, they conclude that predicting works...but not yet in all cases.
