Suzanne McGowan appointed Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics
Meet the new Special Professor of Aquatic Ecosystem Dynamics: Suzanne McGowan. As of 2024 she is appointed at Utrecht University. Her chair offers a unique combination between the university's faculties of Science and Geosciences. McGowan integrates this with her main affiliation as the Head of Aquatic Ecology at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). As a professor, she aims to uncover how water ecosystems have been functioning, and how the major changes on our planet affect this. -
Exposition 'Augmented Ecofeminisms: Climate, Water and Women'
This month at NIOO: the art exhibition 'Augmented Ecofeminisms: Climate, Water, and Women'. This exhibition illustrates how the problems associated with climate change differentially affect women in many parts of the world. -
Climate change impacts on harmful algal blooms
Harmful cyanobacterial blooms produce toxins that are a major threat to water quality and human health. Blooms increase with eutrophication and are expected to be amplified by climate change. Yet, we lack a mechanistic understanding on the toxicity of blooms, and their response to the complex interplay of multiple global change factors. Bloom toxicity is determined by a combination of mechanisms acting at different ecological scales, ranging from cyanobacterial biomass accumulation in the ecosystem, to the dominance of toxic species in the community, contribution of toxic genotypes in the population, and the amounts of toxins in cells. -
Inaugural lecture by Dedmer van de Waal
Op donderdag 6 juli houdt Dedmer van de Waal zijn oratie als bijzonder hoogleraar Aquatische Functionele Ecologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. -
The pandemic and the 'anthropause': European lessons for water managers
The COVID-19 pandemic presented scientists with a unique opportunity to study the effects of an ‘anthropause’: an abrupt reduction of, and/or alteration in, human activities. -
Knowledge Day: Thermal energy from surface water and its ecological effects
The WarmingUP project, STOWA and water managers will present their findings on the ecological effects of thermal energy from surface water during a 'knowledge day' hosted by the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) on 10 November. -
Dedmer van de Waal named Professor by special appointment of Aquatic Functional Ecology
Dedmer van de Waal has been named Professor by special appointment of Aquatic Functional Ecology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). -
Spreading the word about wild swimming... but safety first!
Swimming in nature is healthy. A group of British researchers have started a project to spread the word. -
Nuisance growth of aquatic plants: to mow or not to mow?
Massive growth of submerged aquatic plants can be a nuisance, especially in summer. It's up to water managers to limit the inconvenience for swimmers, boats and fishermen in a way that is both responsible and cost-effective. Michiel Verhofstad defended his PhD thesis this week on the 'root' causes of the problem, and how best to tackle it. -
Pharmaceutical residues increasingly disrupt aquatic life
It's a hidden global change: away from the public eye, residues of medicines in water have been causing increasing disruption. They can kill aquatic animals, and play havoc with their food web and reproductive cycle. An international team of researchers led by the NIOO makes an urgent case for better wastewater treatment and biodegradable pharmaceuticals.
