NIOO joins SummerLabb at Duikvaker diving fair

NIOO stand highlights 'citizen science' water quality research
News
29-01-2018

On 3 and 4 February, NIOO will have a stand at Duikvaker, the annual Dutch fair for scuba divers, freedivers and snorkelers. The NIOO-stand is part of the travelling festival-meets-science project SummerLabb.

"The alliance between Duikvaker and SummerLabb will build a bridge between the underwater world and innovations in the field of sustainability", write the fair's organisers on the Duikvaker website.

NIOO has joined SummerLabb for a number of major festivals and public events in the Netherlands, including SAIL Den Helder and the World Port Days Rotterdam, highlighting surprising research and 'citizen science' that audiences can take part in themselves.

Diving clubs

Divers also play an important role in the recent 'citizen science' campaign to measure water quality in a number of European lakes. NIOO's aquatic knowledge centre, AKWA, has enlisted the help of local diving clubs to measure the two Dutch lakes on the list.

Visitors to the NIOO-stand can also aquaint themselves with the Teabag Index, an easy DIY-method for measuring local water quality with the aid of - yes - teabags, and with Sven Teurlinckx' research into the question what impact feeding ducks has on water quality.

Opening times

After the official opening on Friday, the Duikvaker fair will be open to the public on Saturday 3 February from 10-18 and on Sunday 4 February from 10-17. Hope to see you there!
