Three NIOO researchers on the Highly Cited Researchers list of 2024

Three researchers from the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) are on this year's Clarivate Analytics' Highly Cited Researchers list. Paolina Garbeva for the first time, two others for the seventh consecutive year: Jos Raaijmakers and Wim van der Putten.

The list consists of the 1% of researchers who are the most cited within their field of research. As a result, only one in a thousand researchers worldwide is on this list. To compose the list, Clarivate looks at the number of cited publications from Web of Science - a collection of citation indices covering more than 11,000 scientific journals. Clarivate: “The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at NIOO-KNAW whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community.”

The three NIOO researchers were named ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ of 2024 along with 6,633 other researchers worldwide. Jos Raaijmakers was included in the list for his great influence on other scientists in the field of microbiology. Paolina Garbeva is listed for the first time this year, also with microbiology as her expertise. Terrestrial ecologist and now NIOO's interim director Wim van der Putten falls into the interdisciplinary (‘cross-field’) category at Clarivate. That means his influence should be comparable to that of the top scorers in individual research fields.

NIOO-researchers Marcel Visser (2015, 2016 and 2017), Hans van Veen (2001) and guest researcher Martijn Bezemer (2022) were previously listed as highly cited researchers. Clarivate: "Once a researcher is designated as Highly Cited by Clarivate Analytics, that researcher is always deemed Highly Cited in our view."
