CAFF and IASC have teamed up to provide young scientists with an opportunity to identify an area of interest and expertise, and participate in and contribute to CAFF’s work.
An important part of that work is advising the Arctic Council on conservation issues. As a fellow, Thomas Lameris will be able to sit in on meetings and pursue his own interest in Arctic birds through CAFF's AMBI-initiative.
Lameris will begin his fellowship by attending the CAFF Board Meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska, early next month. After this initial introduction, he will continue with further meetings, and contribute to the programme of the Arctic Biodiversity Congress 2018.
Lameris says his fellowship is not only an honour, but also a great practical opportunity to help Arctic birds.
"It allows me to meet other scientists who are part of a wider international circle, and to make plans that are science-based but also geared towards conservation."
The timing of the fellowship is particularly opportune. Lameris is just starting a Postdoc at NIOZ on the impact of climate change on Arctic waders, a topic on which he is also focusing as part of AMBI.
