Jos Raaijmakers elected member of the KNAW

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has elected 18 new members. They include Jos Raaijmakers, head of the department of Microbial Ecology at NIOO.

The KNAW describes Jos Raaijmakers as a "pioneer" in the field of the plant microbiome.

"Various micro-organisms that live on and in plant tissue can help their 'host plant' in the fight against pathogenic fungi and parasites. To gain insight into these complex interactions, Raaijmakers deploys next generation sequencing techniques, and develops innovative strategies to reduce the excessive use of pesticides."

In this way, according to the KNAW, Raaijmakers' research contributes to the development of a sustainable food production and a more circular society.

Academy membership is regarded as a great honour in the Netherlands. The Academy has around 600 members, who are appointed for life.

The newly elected KNAW members will be installed on Monday 30 October.
