In recent years, the incidence of blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii has been increasing in the Dutch Delta. These blooms pose a health risk not only to swimmers, but also to the shellfish farms in the Oosterschelde. We are carrying out a literature study on the driving factors behind the bloom dynamics of this dinoflagellate, and explore the potential of different mitigation measures for decimating the blooms.
