Study site
Name Mayachino, Russia
Size (ha) 120-170 ha
Major site changes Yes. The nest boxes were placed in boreal forests typical for the region on plots with an area of about 10 sq km. To estimate breeding density, we included only the area of the close vicinity of nest boxes. We included 100 m stripe along the lines of nest boxes (50 m on each side), and added 100 m to the length of the line (50 m on each end). In the plots of nest boxes, a 50 m stripe outside the outermost lines of nest boxes was included in the area. The overall area varied between 120-170 ha since 1980, on average 146 ha.
Latitude 60°46'N
Latitude 32°49'E
Number of nest boxes (min) 267
Number of nest boxes (max) 401
Vegetation Type Evergreen and mixed
Description of study site The station Mayachino is located at the southeast Lake Ladoga coast in Olonets district of Russian Karelia (Russia) in the subzone of middle taiga. The landscape is rather marshy: forests on dry soil comprise just 8% of the total area, and most forests grow on more or less wet soil. Most widespread are pine forests (65%), spruce forests cover 16% of the total forest area, aspen cover 10%, birch 8% and alder 1%. Nest-boxes were provided in mature pine and spruce stands with small admixture of birches (pines 120–130, spruces 80–100 years old), in pine and deciduous mixed forests (70–80 years old), deciduous and spruce mixed forests, black alder stands (70–80 years old), and in young and submature pine and deciduous forests (20–50 years old, with pines, birches, spruces and aspens)
